2010 Earth Day 5K results:
Corinne – 31:28
Claudia – 37:53
Molly – 33:15
Okay, I struggled with which direction to take with this post. (And I’m aware that it’s late. But there’s another one coming later today that will get me back on track.) There were so many great angles to yesterday’s Earth Day 5K. So let me shout them all out from the start before I dig into one of them.
• I am SO totally proud of my wife. She’s run a few 5Ks before. In fact, she’s run a few triathlons before. But those have all been based on sheer guts, stubbornness and determination. Not so much training. This time she’s been committed to running for the last few months. And it’s made a huge difference. She did this 5K as a runner. Not as a walker/jogger. (Not that there’s anything at all wrong with walking and/or jogging. I love them both.) She hit right in middle of her goal time and everything.
• I’m thoroughly impressed with Claudia’s performance. She’s a high-energy person. And the closer she gets to something exciting, the higher her energy level gets. The key to Claudia’s future is going to be finding a way to focus that energy in specific (positive!) directions. Last night she did. Like a laser beam. So, while we expected her to walk/jog in the 45-minute range, she took off like a rocket and sang/squawked/shouted her way through all 3.1 miles. Surprising, funny and impressive all at the same time.
• And then there’s Molly. I love her passion and I love her excitement, but trust me -- her wedding day is going to be a nightmare. That’s because Molly has a difficult time distinguishing between nervous jitters and legitimately founded misgivings. So she’s going to wake up that morning and convince herself that the whole marriage thing is a bad idea. In this case, Molly went from excited and optimistic on Wednesday to tearfully unsure about running on Friday.
But Molly, the question I’ll ask you then is the same one I asked you yesterday: If you don’t try, how will you ever know? I’m not talking about rash and reckless decisions. But if you’ve come up with a plan based on a solid thought process, don’t second guess yourself. See it through and find out where your choices, your passion and your excitement can take you.
In this case, they took her to a staggeringly fast time. Very impressive.
